WORCESTER – Worcester Police observed a group of up to 70 people congregated near Portland St. and Federal St. at about 9:30 PM on Monday, June 2. Worcester Police described the group as “unruly” and the mood “violent and chaotic.”

Individuals in this group threw glass bottles at police cruisers and began blocking traffic on Main St.

The crowd also surrounded a police cruiser near Hammond St. and Main St., forcing the officer to flee on foot.

Worcester Police activated the Tactical Patrol Force to prevent further escalation.

One officer was hit in the head with a piece of concrete. Another was hit in the chest with fireworks. Rocks also struck other officers. Roman candles were fired and dumpsters lit on fire.

Some 90 minutes after the disturbance began, officers deployed smoke grenades and pepperball rounds to disperse the crowd.
