2 Worcester Men Arrested for Stealing Car, Fleeing Westborough Police; Third Suspect Remains At-Large

WESTBOROUGH – Two Worcester men were arrested on Thursday morning after stealing a Volvo in Westborough and fleeing from local police.

According to the Westborough Police Dept., 21-year-old Devon Smith, of 81 Arlington St. in Worcester, and Edward Gale, 19, of 43 Derby St. were arrested on 13 charges, including the theft of a grey Volvo sedan around 3 AM on Thursday morning.

A third suspect is currently still at-large and is being sought by multiple law enforcement departments in Central Massachusetts. 

The Westborough PD received a call about youths attempting to gain entry into the vehicles parked in a driveway on Arch St.

Officers responded to investigate the report and upon arrival, observed two vehicles in the driveway of the reporting party with the doors open and no one around.

A second officer, arriving in the area, observed a grey Volvo sedan driving fast and approaching from the opposite direction on Glen St. The Volvo nearly caused a head-on collision with the Westborough police cruiser.

The officer reversed his direction and attempted to catch up to the fleeing vehicle. The Volvo was traveling on Glen Street toward Tufts University campus in Grafton.

The Volvo was traveling west on Route 30 when the officer lost sight of the vehicle as it went over the crest of a hill in the area of Tuft University campus.

The vehicle left the roadway, Smith and Gale parked the Volvo on the lawn of Tufts campus, and fled from the scene. .

A check on the vehicle’s registration revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen out of the City of Worcester on Wednesday, April 9, 2019.

A multi-agency search was initiated in an attempt to locate and identify the occupants of the Volvo.

After an extensive search in the Town of Grafton, utilizing resources from the Westborough Police Department, Grafton Police Department, Millbury Police Department, Tufts University Police Department, Oxford Police Department, Department of Corrections and Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council, Smith and Gale were arrested:

Smith was located at approximately 7:17 AM on the property of Tufts University and placed into custody without further incident. Gale was located by Millbury Police K9 at approximately 9:10 AM in the area of Nelson Street in Grafton. The search was terminated at approximately 10:30 A.M.

Smith was charged with the following:

  • Using a motor vehicle without authority
  • Larceny under $1200 by single scheme
  • Negligent operation of a motor vehicle
  • Receiving stolen property
  • Breaking and entering in the night time motor vehicle with intent to commit a misdemeanor
  • Speeding
  • Leaving accident scene after a property damage accident
  • Failure to stop for a police officer
  • Operating a motor vehicle with a suspended driver’s license

Gale was charged with the following:

  • Using a motor vehicle without authority
  • Larceny under $1200 by single scheme
  • Receiving stolen property
  • Breaking and entering in the night time motor vehicle with intent to commit a misdemeanor
