In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

In today’s edition – January 12, 2021 –the City of Worcester issues a call for artists, two lieutenants are promoted to Captain at the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, Green Hill Golf Course will be open this Thursday and Friday, Girl Scouts Summer Camp registration opens and gas prices continue to rise in Massachusetts.

 

Call for Artists from City of Worcester

The City of Worcester is seeking submissions from local artists to design fun and interesting custom masks to aid in the fight against COVID-19.

Winners will be selected for age groups under 18 years old and 18 and over.

To submit, artists must include a statement of under 500 words that includes:

  • An artist statement introducing who you are as an artist
  • Themes you explore in your work
  • The themes you’d like to explore in this project

Submissions must also include five samples of the artist’s design work. To enter, email [email protected] with “FACEMASK’ in the subject

Artists under 18 years old are eligible to win gift cards off $500 for first place, $250 for second and $100 for third.

Artists over the age of 18 are eligible to win a $1,000 stipend for first place, $500 gift stipend for second and $100 gift card for third.

 

Two Promoted to Captain at Sheriff’s Department

Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis announced he has promoted Lieutenant Truman Head and Lieutenant Thomas Serafin of Worcester to the rank of Captain

Head, a 24 year Sheriff’s Department veteran, became a Sergeant 2003 and Lieutenant  in 2014. Head most recently served as Lieutenant of main jail operations and will now serve as Captain of the Modular Housing Units. Head lives in Worcester

Serafin, a 30-year veteran of the department, became a Sergeant 2013 and Lieutenant  in 2017. Serafin will continue to command the Sheriff’s Department Transportation Unit.

 

Green Hill Golf Course to Open this Weekend

Green Hill Golf Course will be open Thursday, January 14 and Friday, January 15 to walking players. Golf carts will not be available on the course.

Green Hill could stay open more days depending on the weather. Visit the Green Hill Golf Course website to book a tee time or call (508) 799-1359.

The driving range is open weekdays from 9 AM to 3 PM.

 

Girl Scouts Summer Camp Registration Now Open

Girl Scouts of Central and Western Massachusetts have open registration for all girls for its Summer Camp Program.

Day camp for girls who have finished Kindergarten and up, and resident camp for girls who have finished the first grade are both open.

Gas Prices Up 2 Cents for Second Straight Week in MA

AAA Northeast, the popular not-for-profit auto club, reports changes in gas prices across the region on a weekly basis.

Massachusetts’s average gas price increased six cents from last week ($2.21), averaging $2.27 per gallon. That price is the 16 cents higher than a month ago ($2.11), and 32 cents cheaper than January 11, 2020 ($2.59).

Massachusetts’s average gas price is four cents lower than the national average.

AAA Northeast’s January 11 survey of fuel prices found the current national average to be six cents higher than last week, averaging $2.31 a gallon. Today’s national average price is 16 cents higher than a month ago ($2.15), and 27 cents cheaper than this day last year ($2.58).
