Tips to Stay Safe in Frigid Weather

With recent frigid cold in Worcester County, American Family Care is warning of the health risks of exposure-related conditions. Current pandemic restrictions increases potential to spend extra time outdoors when going to a public place.

AFC advises that the key to avoiding exposure related conditions is to dress in several loose layers and cover as much exposed skin as possible.

A thin base that can wick away moisture from the skin; an insulating middle layer such as a sweater, sweatshirt or down jacket; and a weatherproof outer layer that blocks the elements such as wind and water.

When someone has spent extended time exposed to extreme cold, it is important to recognize the signs of hypothermia. Signs can include shivering, confusion and memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness or exhaustion.

Individuals can also sustain frostbite and are frequently unaware because the tissue becomes numb. It is important not to warm the areas with rubbing or external heat. Signs can include skin that is red and painful. More serious signs include white, gray or yellowish skin; numbness; or skin that feels very firm or waxy.

If seeing signs of either condition, it is important to seek medical attention.

American Family Care [AFC] is a non-emergency, urgent care clinic with 200 locations nationwide, including a locally owned branch at 117A Stafford St. in Worcester.
