In today’s edition – Tuesday, September 22 – Worcester Public Schools is holding a healthcare clinic at University Park today, the Worcester Housing Authority was awarded $10 million for Great Brook Valley revitalization project, Spectrum relaunches a remote education offer, September is Women in Medicine Month and the average price of gas in Massachusetts drops one cent this week.
Worcester Housing Authority Awarded $10 Million
The Worcester Housing Authority [WHA] was awarded $10 million from the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development’s Gateway Cities Neighborhood Revitalization Program to begin work on its “Inspire to Grow” project.
The “Inspire to Grow” project address neighborhood revitalization needs at the WHA’s Curtis Apartments.
The major elements for the project includes:
- Demolition of the Great Brook Valley [GBV] central building at 69 Tacoma St.
- Building a new multi-story, 38,000 square foot Economic Opportunity Center for all for GBV and Curtis Apartments residents services.
- Development of 18 new apartments of public housing at Curtis Apartments, including six fully accessible for disabled residents
- Building a 30,000 square foot green space at the rear of 36-42 Great Brook Valley Ave.
- Replacement of 20 new staircases at the Curtis Apartments
- Restoration of Brookview Drive and area fencing
Worcester Public Schools Student & Family Flu Vaccine Clinic, Free COVID Testing
Worcester Public Schools [WPS] is hosting a flu vaccine clinic at University Park, across from Clark University, from 2 PM to 6 PM. Social distancing will be in effect.
- WPS will provide flu vaccines at no cost for students aged 4-18. Insurance information will be requested.
- Walgreens will provide flu vaccines for students over the age of 18 and adults. Insurance information is required.
- Free COVID-19 testing will be provided by AIDS Project Worcester
- Health benefits advisors will be available to sign-up for health insurance
- Walk-in clinic will be available
Spectrum Relaunches Remote Education Offer
Households with students who do not have current Spectrum service can receive free internet and WiFi for 60 days.
Households with K-12th graders, college students and educators are eligible.
To enroll, new customers can call 844-310-1198 and a free self-installation kit will be provided.
September is Women in Medicine Month
The American Medical Association named September as “Women in Medicine Month” to showcase the accomplishments of women physicians.
The theme of the annual month of recognition is Women in Medicine: Advancing Equity, Creating Change.

Average Cost of Gas Down One Cent
AAA reported on Monday, September 21, that the average price of gas in Massachusetts dropped by one cent this week.
The average price of a gallon of gas in Massachusetts is now $2.12. It was the same price one month ago, although prices have changed in the interim.
The average price one year ago in Massachusetts was $2.61.
Rhode Island and Connecticut also saw a one cent decrease, leaving the average price in those states to $2.14 and $2.19, respectively.
AAA also reported that the average price across the United States also decreased by one cent this week, leaving the national average cost at $2.19 per gallon.
