These five things can cover a whole range of subjects and issues that we feel are pertinent to understanding what’s going on in the city and the cities and towns surrounding Worcester.

In today’s edition – Wednesday, November 11 – Governor Baker will celebrate Veterans Day with Department of Veterans’ Services Secretary Cheryl Lussier Poppe, trash pickup is delayed one day for the rest of the week, Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis is collecting new coats for donations to local area organizations, BBB is warning of a new COVID-19 scam and QCC celebrates National Radiologic Technology Week.

Governor Charlie Baker will join Department of Veterans’ Services Secretary Cheryl Lussier Poppe, veterans, active military, clergy, and musical performers from across the Commonwealth to celebrate Veterans Day in a virtual celebration to pay tribute to those who have served and continue to serve our nation.

The event will be streamed at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11, on the Facebook pages for the Department of Veterans’ Services, the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke, and the Soldiers’ Home in Chelsea, as well as on the official 2020 Veterans Day page, where it will continue to be available for viewing on demand.

Worcester County Sheriff’s Winter Coat Drive

Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis announced a partnership with Dr. Moses Dixon, Executive Director of Central Mass Agency on Aging for this year’s Sheriff’s Office Annual Winter Coat Drive.

In past years, collection boxes for pre-owned jacket donations were placed in local communities. This year, because of COVID-19, the Drive is relying on community grants, monetary gifts and new coat donations.

The drive has already accumulated over 1,100 new winter jackets to help families, children and seniors in need throughout Worcester County.

Winter Coats will be distributed the first week in December to charitable organizations throughout Worcester County.

BBB Warns on COVID-19 Scam

The Better Business Bureau [BBB] is warning on a COVID-19 scam.

Scammers send an unsolicited message via text, email, or a social media message. It explains that you may qualify for a COVID-19 study, which pays upwards of $1,000.

One version received by BBB staff read: “Local Covid19 Study: Compensation up to $1,220!

The phony message includes a link to see whether or not you qualify for the study. If you click it, you could unknowingly download malware onto your computer or phone. This virus can give scammers access to your usernames, passwords, and other personal information stored on your computer.

In other cases, the link may take you to a website that looks like a real clinical trial. You will be asked for personal information, such as government ID or bank account numbers. Real medical researchers would never ask for this information during the screening process!

QCC Celebrates National Radiologic Technology Week

Quinsigamond Community College is celebrating the work of radiologic technologists during National Radiologic Technology (RT) Week from November 8 –14.

The annual event commemorates the discovery of the X-ray by German physicist and mechanical engineer Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen.

The College has a long and storied history of educating future RT health professionals. QCC’s RT program is accredited through the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology, and since 1971 has graduated over 400 radiographers who are working in all 50 states
