In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

These five things can cover a whole range of subjects and issues that we feel are pertinent to understanding what’s going on in the city and the cities and towns surrounding Worcester.

In today’s edition – Thursday, May 20 – the Food Truck Throwdown is coming back this summer, Green Hill golf course is hosting a TaylorMade Fitting Day, the Hangover Pub is releasing a new menu on Friday, Rocco’s Doughnut Company is open on Thursdays again (starting today!) and the Worcester Regional Research Bureau releases data on student in-person opt-in rates.

Food Truck Throwdown Returns this Summer

After a year off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual Food Truck Throwdown is making its triumphant return.

This year, the event will be held at Beaver Brook Park and will include a craft fair. The Throwdown will take place on July 31 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Celebrity judges  and attendees will get to choose the “2020” best food truck. Parking is free and admission is $5.

Green Hill Golf Course is hosting a TaylorMade Fitting Day

Next week, Green Hill golf course will be hosting a TaylorMade Fitting Day at their driving range.

Particpants can be professionally fitted for TaylorMade golf clubs, including the brand new line of TaylorMade products.

The Hangover Pub is Releasing a New Menu on Friday

Good news for foodies in Worcester’s Canal District. The always evolving and inspired The Hangover Pub on Green Street is hitting the refresh button and releasing a new summer menu.

The new menu – seen below – will be available starting Friday at 4 p.m.

And more good news for WooSox fans, if you bring your game day ticket to The Hangover Pub, you will get $10 off any purchase of $50 or more (dine-in only).

Rocco’s Doughnut Co. Returns to Thursdays in Millbury

Starting today — Thursday, May 20 — Rocco’s Doughnut Company in Millbury will be open again on Thursdays.

The popular specialty donut shop will now be open four days a week — Thursday to Sunday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Get down there early because they sell out quick!

Research Bureau Releases In-Person Opt-In School Rates

The Worcester Regional Research Bureau [WRRB] published a brief on in-person opt-in rates for high school students in Worcester Public Schools.

The brief examines geographic and racial patterns in which grades 9-12 Worcester Public Schools [WPS] students have opted into in-person learning and which are remaining fully remote.

The state mandated high school students be offered full-time, in-person learning five days a week staring on May 17. According to WRRB, most Worcester high school students have decided to return full-time, with the exception of South High students. Due to the impacts from that school’s construction project, most South High students will remain either hybrid or remote until May 28, and then shift to fully remote on June 1, except for high needs students who will receive in-person learning at another facility.

WRRB also maintains an interactive map and chart to better facilitate access to the data.

The WRRB brief is available for download.
