WFD to Promote 3 Today

The Worcester Fire Department will promote three of its members on Tuesday, Oct. 1 during a ceremony in the Levi Lincoln Chamber at Worcester’s City Hall. 

The ceremony will take place at 4:30 PM. 

Promotions:

  • Captain David Grilla being promoted to District Chief
  • Lieutenant Matthew Santon being promoted to Captain
  • Fire Fighter Christopher Bishop being promoted to Lieutenant

Worcester Announces Revival of Poet Laureate Program

On Monday, the City of Worcester announced the revival of its Poet Laureate Program and the creation of the Youth Poet Laureate Program.

“As the birthplace of Pulitzer Prize winner Elizabeth Bishop and National Book Award recipient Stanley Kunitz, Worcester has a proud history of producing great poets,” said City Manager Edward M. Augustus, Jr. “We’re excited to announce these poet laureate programs as we continue to engage with different parts of our community, embracing a chorus of diverse voices and perspectives across our city.”

The Poet Laureate will serve a term of three years, from Jan. 2020 through Dec. 2022. The Youth Poet Laureate will serve a two year term, from Jan. 2020 through Dec. 2021.

Worcester Public Library Branches Hosting Harry Potter Events

This week and next week, two Worcester Public Library branches will be hosting Harry Potter: Living Literature .

Each event is for children ages 8 to 12 and will include wand dueling and potion making activities. 

  • Thursday, Oct. 3 at 4 PM – Roosevelt Branch
  • Thursday, Oct. 10 at 4 PM – Tatnuck Magnet Branch

The event is sponsored by the Friends of Worcester Public Library. 

 

Music Worcester Receives $1.2 Million Gift

On Monday, Music Worcester announced the organization has received the largest single contribution in its 160-year history.

A $1.2 million joint gift from the Stoddard Charitable Trust [$1 million] and the Fletcher Foundation [$200,000] will establish a new endowment fund at the Greater Worcester Community Foundation that will support an annual Stoddard/Fletcher Concert in future Music Worcester seasons.

“This combined gift amazes me in so many ways,” said Adrien Finlay, Executive Director of Music Worcester. “As it acknowledges and honors the involvement of multiple generations of Stoddard and Fletcher family members with Music Worcester, and also provides significant resources for Worcester to continue being a key cultural destination for musicians from across the globe.”
