Anna Maria Provides Mental Health First Aid Training for Residence Staff

As part of a comprehensive onboarding program, Anna Maria College provided a mental health first aid training for Resident Advisors and Residence Life staff.

The training was run by  Dr. John Pratico, Professor of Psychology at Anna Maria College and certified the staff in Mental Health First Aid.

The purpose of the training is to help the average person learn how to talk about mental health problems, in particular, as they arise during mental health crisis situations.

“Most people know what to do in the face of a medical emergency – call 911, start CPR – but what about a mental health emergency? It’s often hard to know how to help someone experiencing this type of distress, or to identify the warning signs. This training will help the Residence Life staff to support our students through their college years at Anna Maria,” said Dr. Pratico.

Mass STEM Hub Trains Worcester Teachers in Engaging Students in Engineering Design

On Wednesday, Sept. 25, teachers from the Worcester area participated in a training exercise at WPI — along with 1,700 teachers across the state — on the ‘zero-waste’ curriculum developed by Project Lead the Way

The hands-on trainings that took place this past week in Worcester will help teachers engage their students in the engineering design process in their classrooms to solve real world problems like microplastics and e-waste.

Teachers that attended the training completed the activities their students will be taking on during the STEM Week Challenge. Massachusetts STEM Week takes place from Oct. 21 to 25.

The STEM Week Challenge is presented by Mass STEM Hub and Project Lead The Way, along with industry partners TD Garden, MassDEP, and Dell Technologies.

Massachusetts Pirates are Currently Without a League to Play In

Following the merger between the National Arena League and the Champions Indoor Football league, the Massachusetts Pirates — who play right here in Worcester at the DCU Center — announced on Thursday that they wouldn’t be joining the newly formed league.

Instead, the team will its explore its options for the future.

According to an article on the team’s website, Pirates founder, owner, president and general manager Jawad Yatim is against the merger.

Yatim said, “We would like to thank the NAL for the past two years as it was a joy to work with the hard working partners who go about this business in the correct fashion. In saying this however, we have decided we are not taking part in the NAL-CIF merger. As much as we respect our partners, there is a disparity in opinions of how the league should move forward. I don’t feel it is in the best interest of the Massachusetts Pirates and our fans to choose to participate in the NAL-CIF, and we are exploring alternate options for 2020 and beyond. We wish our fellow NAL partners the absolute best and continued success.”
