In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

These five things can cover a whole range of subjects and issues that we feel are pertinent to understanding what’s going on in the city and the cities and towns surrounding Worcester.

In today’s edition – Wednesday, May 12 – MassDOT to close Exit 13 on Rt. 146 tonight, the RMV warns of a phishing scam, Kidde issues recall on some smoke detectors, the Worcester Public Library launches “Dial a Story” and Dunkin’ adds to its at-home iced flavors.

MassDOT to Close Ramp at Exit 13 on Rt. 146 Wednesday Night

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation [MassDOT] announced the temporary closing of the on-ramp and off-ramp on Route 146 southbound at exit 13 in Sutton.

The closures will take place from 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12, through 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 13.

Drivers will signage direct for detours during the temporary closures:

  • Traffic entering Route 146 southbound will find signage directing drivers to take Route 146 northbound and reverse direction at Boston Road.
  • Traffic looking to exit Route 146 southbound at this location will directed to use exit 11 to access Route 146 northbound back to exit 13.

MassDOT encourages drivers to seek alternate routes, reduce speed, and use caution while approaching and traveling through the work zone.

Massachusetts RMV Warns of Phishing Scam

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) is cautioning customers to be aware of a text phishing scam reported across several states.

The scam reportedly involves customers receiving text messages, claiming to be from the “DMV,” that direct them to click on a provided link to update their personal identifying contact information.

Customers can identify this type of text as a phishing scam because it includes “DMV” and in Massachusetts DMV is not the name of the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Residents should delete any text using the phrase “Department of Motor Vehicles” or “DMV.”

The RMV advises it does not send unsolicited requests for personal and/or contact information to customers by text. Any communication by text from the RMV would result from a customer-initiated request or transaction.
