In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

These five things can cover a whole range of subjects and issues that we feel are pertinent to understanding what’s going on in the city and the cities and towns surrounding Worcester.

In today’s edition – Wednesday, May 19 – the Worcester Bravehearts reveal special firefighters jerseys, Quinsigamond Community College is holding their 2021 Commencement Ceremony virtually, Assumption University is partnering with NECC for a fellowship program, Amtrak is offering student discounts this summer and MassDOT is hosting a virtual meeting highlighting capital investments in Central Massachusetts.

Worcester Bravehearts Partner with DetecTogether for Firefighter Jerseys

The Worcester Bravehearts have partnered with DetectTogether (formerly the 15-40 Connection), a national education and advocacy organization based in Westborough.

DetecTogether’s mission is saving lives by teaching people how to detect cancer early and how to be active partners in their healthcare. They focus significant resources teaching 3 Steps Detect to firefighters. DetecTogether recently delivered its 3 Steps Detect education to 400 Worcester firefighters.

In a game on July 24, the Bravehearts will wear special firefighter jerseys which will then be auctioned off with the proceeds going to DetectTogether. The Bravehearts and DetecTogether chose a firefighter theme to bring awareness to the increased risk of cancer faced by firefighters across the country.

QCC Commencement Virtual Ceremony

Quinsigamond Community College [QCC] will hold its Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2021 virtually on Friday, May 21 at 1:00 PM.

Assumption Partners with NECC for Fellowship Program

Assumption University and The New England Center for Children [NECC], an internationally recognized leader in autism intervention, research, and professional development, have announced an Applied Behavior Analysis Fellowship.

The Fellowship will allow students the opportunity to pursue a Master of Arts in Applied Behavior Analysis degree at Assumption while working with research professionals at NECC..

Assumption’s ABA master’s degree program includes a practicum sequence that is aligned with the students’ coursework and allows them to develop clinical skills in a coordinated fashion. The clinical supervision and exposure will further strengthen the focus on developing each student’s competencies in all areas relevant to research that Fellows will receive at NECC.
