5 Things You Need to Know Today in Worcester – April 18

In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

These five things can cover a whole range of subjects and issues that we feel are pertinent to understanding what’s going on in the city and the cities and towns surrounding Worcester.

In today’s edition – Monday, April 18 – it’s Patriots Day and that means City Hall is closed, trash and recycling is delayed one day and the WRTA is running on a Saturday schedule; sign-ups for Tennis in the Parks is underway and Worcester’s Arbor Day Festival is scheduled for May 1.

City Hall, Municipal Offices are Closed Today

It’s Patriots Day and City Hall and other municipal offices are closed on Monday.

Bill pay and other transactions can still be made online at worcesterma.gov. Offices will reopen Tuesday at 8:30 AM.

Trash and Recycling Delayed One Day due to Patriots Day

Trash and recycling will not be collected due to the Patriots Day holiday.

Monday’s collection will be on Tuesday, April 19 and collections for the rest of the week will be one day later than normal.

The Residential Drop-off Site located at 1065 Millbury St. will also be closed on Monday. The site will reopen for household recycling drop-off on Tuesday from 8:30 AM to 3 PM.

WRTA Running on Saturday Schedule Today

WRTA buses will run on a Saturday schedule on Monday with the exception of Routes 29, 33, 42 and community shuttles which will operate on a regular weekday schedule.

Route 19 will operate on a modified Saturday holiday schedule.

All administrative office,  including the WRTA Customer Service Center will be closed.

Worcester’s Tennis in the Parks Program Starts in May

Two youth Tennis in the Parks programs will be run this spring at Newton Hill Park and Institute Park.

Three Newton Hill park programs will run on Saturdays starting May 7 at 9 AM. The three programs at Institute Park will run on Sunday starting May 8 at 10 AM. Each program is an hour long and is divided into age groups. The programs run through mid-June.

Up to 10 children can participate in each program. The cost is $60 for Worcester residents. For program questions, email: [email protected]. For general questions, email: [email protected].

Arbor Day Festival Scheduled for May 1

The City of Worcester is welcoming all residents to the Arbor Day Festival on May 1 at University Park.

The event is free and will run from 11 AM to 3 PM.

Last year, the city planted three trees at Elm Park on Arbor Day to honor the residents who died during the COVID-19 pandemic.
