In today’s edition – Thursday, August 11 –  Shawarma Palace applies for outdoor dining in downtown Worcester, Cornerstone Bank awards 16 college scholarships to local high school graduates, Quinsigamond Community College is hosting a vaccine clinic this month, Peppercorns has free tickets to a Jimmy Buffet cover band and the Auburn Police Department is hosting a school supply drive.

Shawarma Palace Applies for Outdoor Dining Permit

Shawarma Palace at 20 Franklin St. in downtown Worcester is applying for a temporary outdoor dining permit for three tables and seating for six.

Shawarma Palace will go before the city’s License Commission on Thursday morning. The restaurant is requesting outdoor dining six days a week: Monday to Wednesday from 10 AM to 4 PM and Thursday to Saturday from 10 AM to 7 PM.

Cornerstone Bank Awards 16 College Scholarships

Cornerstone Bank, with 10 locations throughout central Massachusetts, announced the 16 recipients of their scholarship awards program for local high school graduates. Each graduate is awarded $2,500 to assist with college expenses.

“Cornerstone Bank is proud to help students in our community reach their educational goals,” said Cornerstone Bank CEO Todd Tallman. “We want to foster the growth and development of the next generation of business and finance professionals, and congratulate these 16 exceptional students on their achievements, wishing them continued success.”

Here is the list of the 2022 scholarship recipients along with the name of the school they plan to attend in the fall:

  • Madeline Duke of Shrewsbury, Indiana University

  • Abigail Hill of Brimfield, Westfield State University
  • Nhi Huynh of Worcester, Harvard College
  • Brian Langevin of Sturbridge, University of Alabama
  • Owyn Law of Dudley, Quinnipiac University
  • Colin Minarik of Webster, Bentley University
  • Samuel Murillo of Charlton, University of Massachusetts, Lowell
  • Christopher Murzycki of Spencer, Worcester State University
  • Arieta Nasto of Worcester, Villanova School of Business
  • Brennan Ogert, Nichols College
  • Lauren Potvin of Charlton, Worcester Academy
  • Nina Zurawski of Charlton, Suffolk University

To be considered for a scholarship, each student had to:

  • Be a 2022 high school graduate
  • Anticipate being a full-time student at an accredited, degree-granting institution of higher education
  • Anticipate studying in a business or financial field
  • Demonstrate achievement and high standards in academics, extracurricular activities and community involvement
  • Submit an official transcript and GPA from their guidance office
  • Submit a one-page essay

Get Vaccinated at QCC, Get a Free $25 Stop and Shop Gift Card

Quinsigamond Community College is hosting a free COVID-19 vaccine clinic on Aug. 27 from 9 AM to 1 PM.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health will be giving out $25 gift cards for Stop and Shop to anyone who gets vaccinated or boosted that day.

The clinic is open to the public. No appointment and no insurance is needed.

Peppercorns Has Free Tickets to Jimmy Buffet Cover Band

On Sunday, Aug. 20, Peppercorns is hosting The Island Castaways, a Jimmy Buffet cover band, for a live performance at the restaurant’s beer garden.

The show is 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM. Tickets are free to the event, but must be reserved here.

Auburn Police Hosting School Supply Drive

From now through Aug. 22, the Auburn Police Department and Auburn Youth and Family Services are collecting new school supplies for AYFS.

School supplies can be dropped off at the lobby of the Auburn Police Department at 416 Oxford St. North in Auburn.

AFYS is looking for backpacks, earbuds or headphones, pencils, notebooks, folders and reusable water bottles (no squeeze tops).
