In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

In today’s edition – Monday, November 21 – South High students will appear on GBH’s “High School Quiz Show,” complete a questionnaire on Worcester’s citywide plan, drop-in for holiday photos at the Worcester Public Library, Worcester Public Schools students are receiving at-home COVID-19 tests before Thanksgiving break and Wachusett Mountain opens for the season this week.

South High Students to Appear on GBH’s ‘High School Quiz Show’

South High Community School has earned a spot on Season 14 of GBH’s televised academic tournament, “High School Quiz Show.”

South High is among 17 Massachusetts high schools that earned top scores at Super Sunday, High School Quiz Show’s qualifying event on Nov. 6.

“High School Quiz Show” will begin taping in January 2023 at GBH’s studios in Brighton. Season 14 premieres on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 6 PM on GBH 2 and on the “High School Quiz Show”  YouTube channel with the Wild Card match: Concord-Carlisle High School vs. Melrose High School.

This will be South High’s fourth appearance on the show. The team will face off against Andover High School on Feb. 11.

Complete a Questionnaire on Worcester’s Citywide Plan

A questionnaire is now available for Worcester residents to provide their input on housing, transportation and economic opportunity in the city.

The survey is part of Worcester’s 18-month Now | Next  citywide plan.

Worcester Public Library Hosting Drop-in Holiday Photos Starting Today

The Worcester Public Library’s Main Library is welcoming guests to take their holiday photos in front of their snowy scene backdrop.

No appointment is necessary. Starting today, Nov. 21, through Dec. 23, the display will be on the third floor of the library. 

Guests must bring their own camera. 

The library will also be hosting pet photos at the display by appointment only on Sunday, Dec. 4 and Sunday, Dec. 18 from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM. For more information and to make an appointment for pet pictures email Cara at [email protected].

Visitors to the holiday scene are also welcome to bring a donation of a new pet food, treat, or toy to donate to the Worcester Animal Rescue League.

Worcester Public Schools Students Receiving at-home COVID-19 Tests before Thanksgiving Break

On Tuesday, Worcester Public Schools students and staff members will receive at-home COVID-19 tests to be used before returning to school next week.

The tests are provided free of charge from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, Office of Health and Human Services and Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Students and staff are recommended to take the tests at least 24 hours before they return to school.

Wachusett Mountain Opens for Season this Week

Wachusett Mountain will open on Friday, Nov. 25 for the 2022-2023 ski and snowboarding season.
