In today’s edition – Wednesday, October 26 – the Auburn Police are hosting a public safety citizen’s academy, Wynonna Judd is coming to the DCU Center, a ribbon cutting is planned for a new development at 120 Washington Street, local girl scouts receive a $10,000 donation and Massachusetts ranks the sixth safest state in the U.S.

Auburn Police Public Safety Citizen’s Academy

The Auburn Police Department begins its first ever joint public safety citizen’s academy with the Auburn Fire Department on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The eight-week program gives Auburn residents residents an inside look at the operations of their public safety departments.

Wynonna Judd at the DCU Center

Country Music Hall of Fame member Wynonna Judd will perform at the DCU Center in downtown Worcester in her only performance of “The Judds: The Final Tour” in Massachusetts, on Sunday, Jan, 29, at 7:30 PM.

Ribbon Cutting for 120 Washington Development

The City of Worcester will hold a groundbreaking event this week for Phase One of a mixed-use development at the site of the former Table Talk Pies factory at 120 Washington St.

The ceremony will take place at 120 Washington St. at 2 PM on Thursday, Oct. 27.

The groundbreaking marks a major milestone for the project, led by Boston Capital Development LLC, that will add 83 units of affordable housing to Worcester.

Local Girl Scouts Receive $10,000 for Financial Literacy for Girls

The Girl Scouts of Central and Western Massachusetts received a $10,000 grant from the TD Charitable Foundation in support of On Your Own: Financial Literary for Girls. The grant will provide a free badge program to all Girl Scouts designed to empower them to control their financial futures.

On Your Own: Financial Literacy for Girls is available to all members in grades K through 12.

Worcester Ranks the Sixth Safest City in America

A new study that evaluated 53 key metrics and comparing all 50 states to find the most and least safe states in America. The study ranks Massachusetts the sixth safest state.

The individual metrics that contributed to the rank of Massachusetts.

  • 1st – Share of Uninsured Population
  • 1st – Fatalities per 100 Million Vehicle Miles of Travel
  • 4th – Percentage of Residents Who Are Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19
  • 5th – Murders & Non-Negligent Manslaughters per Capita
  • 5th – Sex Offenders per Capita
  • 6th – Loss Amounts from Climate Disasters per Capita
  • 7th – Fatal Occupational Injuries per 100,000 Full-Time Workers
  • 12th – Bullying Incidence Rate
  • 21st – Assaults per Capita
  • 27th – Law-Enforcement Employees per Capita

New England and surrounding states were ranked in overall ranking.

  • 1 – Vermont
  • 2 – Maine
  • 3 – New Hampshire
  • 6 – Massachusetts
  • 10 – Rhode Island
  • 15 – New Jersey
  • 22 – New York

The states other states in the top five safest states were Utah in fourth and Hawaii in fifth.

The five least safest states in the U.S. in the study were:

  • 45 – Oklahoma
  • 46 – Alabama
  • 47 – Texas
  • 48 – Arkansas
  • 49 – Mississippi
  • 50 – Louisiana
