Last Updated: October 27, 2022

In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

These five things can cover a whole range of subjects and issues that we feel are pertinent to understanding what’s going on in the city and the cities and towns surrounding Worcester.

In today’s edition – Thursday, October 27 – how the month on your next inspection sticker will be determined changes Tuesday, the Worcester Community Action Council receives $25,000 to support heating assistance, the Worcester Housing Authority is hiring, the Department of Public Health contraception programs available and two Holy Cross alumni to bring their collection to the Cantor Art Gallery 20 years later.

Changes Coming to Massachusetts Vehicle Inspection Stickers on Nov. 1

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) changes when vehicle inspection stickers will expire.

Effective Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2022, vehicles with an expired inspection sticker, will receive a sticker with the number of the month the vehicle inspection was originally due; not the number of the month the vehicle is now being inspected. Motor vehicles passing the required inspection on time, will continue to receive a new sticker with the number of the month the last sticker expired.

Worcester Community Action Council Receives $25,000

The Worcester Community Action Council (WCAC) announced its Emergency Fuel Fund received a $25,000 from Webster Five bank.

WCAC said it is bracing for an extremely challenging winter heating season, having already seen an increase of more than 200% in new applications to its federally-funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

WCAC’s Emergency Fuel Fund supports some of the most vulnerable households in our region – seniors, disabled individuals, veterans, and families with young children – especially after their federal fuel assistance allocation has been depleted. Last winter WCAC processed more than 13,500 applications for home heating assistance.

Worcester Housing Authority is Hiring

The Worcester Hiring Authority (WHA) announced it has recently opened a search to hire an accountant. The position reports to the Vice President of Accounting and requires at least a two-year degree in accounting or a related field.

The WHA has several other openings, including for a Materials and Information Liason, Assistant Vice President of Maintenance, Plumber, Electrician and other positions.

DPH Promotes Available Contraception Coverage

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) recently expanded its public information campaign to raise awareness of the birth control benefits available under the Act Relative to Advancing Contraceptive Coverage and Economic Security in our State (ACCESS) law.

The ACCESS law enacted in 2017 enables eligible individuals to receive:

  • A year’s supply of no-cost birth control — including the pill, patches, rings, or injectable birth control — with just one visit to the pharmacy.
  • Emergency contraception (like Plan B) at no cost with a prescription from a clinician.

To be eligible, individuals must be covered by a health insurance plan subject to Massachusetts law, including MassHealth, plans purchased on the MA Health Connector, or the MA Group Insurance Commission. Find out if you are covered here and learn more about the program here.

Cantor Art Gallery to Showcase Collection Built by Holy Cross Alumni

The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery at the College of the Holy Cross is pleased to present works by emerging contemporary artists from the collection of alumni Brad Schuller (class of 2003) and Gabrielle Schuller (class of 2002) in the exhibition “See You Through It,” on view from Nov. 7 through Dec. 17, in the newly-opened Prior Performing Arts Center.

The Schullers, who currently live and work in Denver, Colorado, met as students at Holy Cross in the late 1990s. For the past decade, they have been building a collection comprised of the work of young, West Coast-based artists. The collection includes paintings, sculptures and mixed-media artworks, by artists whose work broadly considers the self in modern society.

Artists included in the exhibition are Adam Bateman, Razvan Boar, Owen Fu, Brandon Landers, Victor Machado, Tala Madani, Mando Marie, Simphiwe Ndzube, Mike Shultis, Adam Stamp, William Stockman, Helen Teede and Mike Womack.
