Gas Prices Rise this Week in Massachusetts

AAA Northeast reports changes in gas prices across the region on a weekly basis.

Massachusetts’s average gas price increased nine cents this week, after two weeks of flat prices, now averaging $3.19 per gallon. That price is 11 cents higher than a month ago ($3.08), and $1.08higher than October 4, 2020 ($2.11).

Massachusetts’s average gas price is eight cents lower than the national average.

“The key driver for this recent rise in the price of gas is crude oil, which typically accounts for between 50% and 60% of the price at the pump,” says Mary Maguire, Director of Public/Government Affairs. “And last week’s decision by OPEC and its oil-producing allies to not increase production further also helped boost gas prices by tightening the supply.”

AAA Northeast’s October 12  survey of fuel prices found the current national average to be seven cents higher than last week, averaging $3.27 a gallon. Today’s national average price is 10 cents higher than a month ago ($3.17) and $1.09 higher than this day last year ($2.18).

Comparison to neighboring states, according to AAA Northeast:

Region Current Price One Week Ago One Month Ago One Year Ago
Massachusetts $3.19 $3.10 $3.08 $2.11
Rhode Island $3.18 $3.09 $3.07 $2.13
Connecticut $3.31 $3.22 $3.19 $2.18
