Tim Collins Designated for Assignment by Chicago Cubs after Trade

Just days after being called up, Worcester’s Tim Collins has once again been designated for assignment to the Chicago Cubs’ AAA-affiliate.

The Cubs acquired lefty Derek Holland from the San Francisco Giants, pushing Collins back to the minors to create a roster spot.

Collins, 29, has pitched to a 4.67 ERA with a 12.3K/9.

MLB rosters expand in early September. Be sure to keep an eye out for another call-up for Collins.

Clark University Named a Best Value School Among U.S. Colleges

Clark University has once again been named a best value school by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance. The annual list looks at academic quality and affordability to rank private universities, public schools, and liberal arts colleges.

Clark is ranked at #28 on the magazine’s 2019 list of the country’s best values in private universities; the full list is available online.

“Our rankings—which weigh affordability alongside academic quality—are designed to help families see how their full array of college options stack up,” said Kaitlin Pitsker, associate editor, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine. “This year’s list features recurring winners, as well as rising stars and new additions, all of which are worth a look.”

The full rankings will appear in print in the September 2019 issue of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, on newsstands August 13.

Worcester Public Library to Display Portion of Dr. John Green Collection

Now through Sept. 30, the Worcester Public Library will display a small portion of the Dr. John Green Collection at the Main Library.

The rare public viewing of these items comes as the library works to improve conservation methods with the help of a Conservation of Library and Archival Materials Grant from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC).

On December 23, 1859, the Worcester City Council accepted Dr. Green’s gift of 7,000 books to form the basis of the Worcester Public Library. Before his death in 1865, Dr. Green added 5,000 more volumes to the Green Reference Collection.

For many years, Dr. Green had collected books with the object of founding a free public library. Since the users of his collection were to be the general public, he consciously collected material covering many interests, not just his own.

These books are just a small sample of his collection. There is a good deal of fiction, biography, history, travels and religion. Nature, philosophy, agriculture, and even the cataloging of books are also represented.
