Mayor Petty Releases Statement on City’s Plastic Recycling Bag Plan

In theory, this statement should have lead off Monday’s “5 Things,” but it slipped through the cracks. Well, we are rectifying the situation and making it #5 the day after.

The following statement was released on Friday, July 26 from Mayor Joe Petty’s office:

Over the last several months there have been numerous public meetings during which the proposed changes to Worcester’s recycling program have been discussed. The current use of open recycling bins has led to an increase in the amount of litter on our streets as well as an increase in the amount of contaminated material being picked up by our recycling trucks. The recommendation of clear recycling bags, which have been proven to mitigate these issues, has led to a healthy public debate.

After hearing from my colleagues on the City Council on Tuesday night and many residents, both on Tuesday night and in the intervening days, I will be asking the City Council to recommit the proposed changes to the recycling program to the City Manager for reexamination; specifically a comparative analysis of the carbon footprint of the large plastic carts, the plastic bag option, as well as the existing recycling plastic bins program.  I agree with Councilor Matt Wally that a perfect recycling plan which satisfies all parties is not likely to be identified and we shouldn’t let the idea of perfection get in the way of improvement.  We both feel that study could help identify the best option for our city.

I have spoken with the City Manager and he is committed to finding a fair and environmentally sound implementation plan that will address our city’s needs.
