Councilor At-Large Konstantina “Konnie” Lukes Calls it Quits

After 30 years [15 terms] as a City Councilor, Konnie Lukes won’t be seeking re-election this Fall. According to multiple reports, Lukes is stepping away for family reasons and won’t run for a 16th term.

The Councilor At-Large seat opening will certainly make things interesting heading into this Fall’s election. 

Lukes served as Mayor from 2007 through 2009. She also served four two-year terms as a member of the Worcester School Committee.

 

Insomnia Cookies to Open Up Shop in Kelley Square

MassLive and the Worcester Business Journal are reporting that late-night delivery chain Insomnia Cookies will be opening up a store this year at 1 Kelley Sq.

Known for their cookie delivery service until 3 AM seven days a week, Insomnia Cookies should be a big hit in this college city — especially with such close proximity to the nightlife of the city’s Canal District.

Worcester Roller Derby to Host Home Opener Doubleheader

Worcester Roller Derby has two teams — Triple Deck-Hers and Hurt of the Commonwealth — and they’re playing back-to-back against the Punishers and The Brawlin’ Broads in WoRD’s first home game at their new venue, The Hab in Uxbridge. Come out and cheer on your favorite derby girls while having a beer in the bar that overlooks the track! Roller derby is family friendly so bring the whole crew! Doors open at 3, first game begins at 4!

 

EcoTarium to Open Gear Up: The Science of Bikes on May 18

The EcoTarium will opening up a temporary exhibit Gear Up: The Science of Bikes on May 18 and will kick it off with Bike Fest on May 18.

The event includes riding demos, hands-on activities, and a bikes obstacle course for kids.

POW! WOW! to Host Firefighter’s Day Art Unveiling on Friday, May 3

Officials from the City of Worcester, the Worcester Fire Department and POW! WOW! Worcester will be at the Grove St. fire station on Friday, May 3 for a special art unveiling honoring local heroes in advance of International Firefighter’s Day (Saturday, May 4).
