67-Year-Old Man Dies in Rock Collapse in Sterling

STERLING – A man died after a portion of a rock ledge collapsed in Sterling on Thursday.

Brian Curtis Derby, 67, of Townsend, was working inside an excavator at a quarry at 17 Stone Crest Way on Thursday, Aug. 22, when the collapse happened. Crews responding to the incident used cameras to assess the situation under the collapse, but determine there were no signs of life.

Officials pronounced Derby dead at 8:39 AM.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration inspected the scene on Thursday to determine if efforts to retrieve his body could happen safely on Thursday.

Crews worked throughout the night on Thursday. The Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner took possession of Derby’s body on Friday morning,

The Worcester County District Attorney’s office released the name of the man on Friday, Aug. 23.

The District 8 Technical Rescue Team, which includes assets from Barre, Clinton, Leominster, Fitchburg, Gardner, Holden, Sterling, and West Boylston, recovered Derby’s body from the collapse.
