WORCESTER – Four Worcester organizations are among 100 groups to receive youth summer job grants from Massachusetts’ Attorney General Maura Healey’s office.

According to the AG’s office, the City of Worcester, the Worcester Youth Center, Girls, Inc. of Worcester and YWCA of Central Mass. will all receive grant money to fund summer jobs for young people that are focused on health and wellness.

In total, 100 organizations across the state will share $332,000 in grant funding.

“Our summer jobs program provides hundreds of young people across the state with an opportunity to challenge themselves, gain new skills, and make a difference in their own community,” Healey said. “We are pleased to be able to continue support cities, towns and nonprofits with this funding that keeps young people active and safe in the summer months and improves public health in Massachusetts.”

Other groups in Worcester County to receive funding include: City of Gardner, Boys & Girls Club of Fitchburg and Leominster, Town of Rutland Recreation Department, Town of Webster Recreation Department,  Children Across America in Milford and Hockomock Area YMCA in Milford.

The funding will support summer jobs from July 8, 2019 through Aug. 30, 2019.

Examples of jobs funded through this year’s grant program include:

  • Coaching sports or physical fitness activities at a summer camp;
  • Building and maintaining a community garden or urban farm;
  • Leading classes on cooking, nutrition and healthy lifestyles;
  • Creating a recycling awareness campaign for the community; and,
  • Mentoring and educating youth about healthy relationships.

This summer marks the fifth year that the AG’s Office is running the grant program, which allows teens to hold summer jobs in their own communities that are focused on promoting nutrition, physical fitness and healthy living.
