WORCESTER - A Leominster man from Mexico was sentenced in federal court on Thursday for illegally reentering the United States after being removed.

Eduardo Alvarez, 32, was sentenced to one year in federal prison after pleading guilty to illegal reentry after deportation and forcibly assaulting, resisting, or impeding a federal officer.

On Feb. 16, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers observed Alvarez driving away from his home in a white Audi. After officers attempted to force Alvarez to stop, he accelerated and struck an officer vehicle. He then drove through a red light into oncoming traffic, forcing others off the road.

Alvarez returned to his home and spent 90 minutes hiding from officers before surrendering.

Alvarez was previously removed from the United States twice, in 2009 and 2001.
