Three Arrested After Independence Day Stabbing in Worcester

WORCESTER – Police responded to Bell Pond on Sunday, July 4, in response to a 17-year-old lifeguard stabbed during an altercation with a group around 6:30 PM.

According to the Worcester Police Department, the investigation revealed that a group of people were drinking and smoking in the park. When they were told to stop or leave, several people left.

One person within the group became verbally aggressive and made verbal threats. He left and returned shortly thereafter with a small group that attacked the victim. During the altercation, the victim was stabbed and hit with a stick.

Shortly after officers at the scene sent information about the suspects over the radio, other officers stopped a suspect after a foot pursuit near Wilson St.

Celestine Bigirimana, 22, of Worcester, faces charges of Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, Disturbing the Peace, Disorderly Conduct, Trespassing, Resisting Arrest, and Possession of an Open Container of Alcohol.

Officers near East Park found three other individuals walk from the woods into the park. Officers detained those men and a brief investigation revealed led to their arrest for the attack on the lifeguard.

Police later released one of those men without charges based on information later revealed in the investigation.

Mohamed Abdullahi, 19, of Worcester, faces charges of Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon and Disturbing the Peace.

A 17-year-old juvenile faces charges of Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, Disorderly Conduct, and Disturbing the Peace.

Worcester Police Chief Steven Sargent released the following statement about the incident: “After the shocking stabbing of a city lifeguard yesterday, the Worcester Police Department will be increasing patrols at our beaches and parks. We will not tolerate those who would use violence to take away the peace of our public spaces. I pray for the recovery of the victim and thank the officers for their swift response that led to the perpetrators being held accountable.”
