WORCESTER – Local artist Michael D’Angelo of NinjaMoto Fabrications has created a large-scale set of 3D glasses that will bring POW!WOW! Worcester mural “Mooncake” to a whole new dimension.

Located on the Hanover Theatre and Conservatory, the “Mooncake” mural was created by Greek artist Insane51 during the 2018 POW!WOW! Worcester Festival. This work features a double-exposed image which is painted in red and blue tones. When viewed at through a pair of 3D glasses the mural changes from skeletal figures to a couple lovingly embracing.

Installed on April 14, the new large-scale glasses will allow the public to see the full 3D effect and range of the mural without having to worry about obtaining their own glasses.

“Our mission at POW! WOW! Worcester is to curate a culture of public art that benefits our community,” said Lisa Drexhage, Co-Director of POW! WOW! Worcester. “This installation creates a new experience for people in Downtown Worcester and provides a fun and fresh take on one of the city’s most prominent murals.”

The art installation further beautifies the downtown area while providing residents, visitors, and city-goers with a whole new appreciation for the piece. According to The Hanover Theatre President and CEO Troy Siebels, “Having Insane51’s mural on our building transforms the whole area. The 3D glasses will enable everyone to see the mural with all of the depth that the artist intended.”

The 3D glasses art installation was facilitated through donations from the Downtown Worcester Business Improvement District, The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts, and the Worcester Business Development Corporation. Maintenance of the 3D glasses will also be provided by the Downtown Worcester Business Improvement District.

“We are very pleased to help ensure the longevity of this new sculpture, which enhances viewing of Insane51’s captivating mural,” said Downtown Worcester Business Improvement District Executive Director Evelyn Darling. “It is exciting to see the growing number of murals and other public art installations transform Downtown Worcester’s streetscape and shape our identity as a community.”

The Hanover Theatre is located at 2 Southbridge St.
