WORCESTER – Although it seems surrounding towns are frequently reporting vehicle break-ins recently, police in Worcester say the city has actually seen a decrease in breaks so far this year.
Over the past few weeks, strings of car break-ins were reported in Millbury, Grafton, Southborough, and Sutton.
Car break-ins in Worcester were down nine percent over the first eight months of 2020, compared to the city’s five-year average.
According to the Worcester Police Department [WPD], as of Sept. 16, the WPD there were 84 reported car breaks so far this month. The five-year average for September is 99 break-ins.
In a released statement, a WPD spokesperson said, “Last September, there were 144 reported car breaks [highest number of reported car breaks in a month since 2016], however, the majority of these were related to catalytic converter thefts.”
Most of the car breaks this month have been reported on Sundays [23] or Fridays [24].
Data provided to ThisWeekinWorcester.com shows the majority of breaks from 2017 to 2020 occurred overnight [63%] and involved an unlocked car or smashed window.
