AUBURN – A Connecticut man, arrested in Auburn on Tuesday, faces charges related to stealing over $21,0000 in jewelery while driving a stolen car.

Officers patrolling the Auburn Mall on Tuesday came upon a vehicle facing the wrong direction in the fire lane. A search of the license plate number revealed it did not match the vehicle.

Moments later, a man fled the mall, entered the vehicle and sped away. Officers caught up to the vehicle and stopped it on Swanson Road.

Inside the vehicle, police say Jaquel Newsome, 28, of Waterbury, Connecticut, was wearing a necklace and bracelet, both with the tags still attached.

While officers were conducting the stop, an employee from a jewelry store in the Auburn Mall was reporting to a police dispatcher that a man had just run out of the store with a bracelet and necklace with a combined value of $21,499.

Newsome was arrested without incident.

The vehicle VIN number revealed it was reported stolen.

According to the Auburn Police Department, detectives have linked Newsome to other jewelry store thefts in New England.

Newsome faces charges of:

  • Larceny over $1200;
  • Receiving a Stolen Motor Vehicle; and
  • License Plate Violation
