Census: Worcester One of the Fastest Growing Cities in MA

Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin announced the official results of the 2020 census for Massachusetts on Thursday, August 12.

The population of Massachusetts grew by 7.4% since 2010, with 7,029,917 residents in the state. The state population grew by 482,288 over the 10 year period.

The City of Worcester added 25,473 residents, a 14.1% growth. Worcester now has a population of 206,518.

Of the ten largest cities in Massachusetts, Worcester is the fastest growing. Of all cities in Massachusetts, Worcester is the fifth fastest growing.

Massachusetts Largest Cities

Revere (20.2%), Everett (17.8%), Lawrence (16.7%) and Chelsea (15.9%) are the cities growing faster than Worcester. Of those cities, only Lawrence (89,143) and Revere (62,186) have over 50,000 residents.

Worcester also ranked as the 25th fastest growing city or town in Massachusetts.

The fastest growing town is Aquinnah, on Martha’s Vinyard, which grew 41.2% from 311 residents to 439 residents.

Between 2010 and 2020, the population of Worcester County grew by 63,559, representing 8 percent growth. The census accounted for 862,111 Worcester County residents.

Worcester County is the fourth largest growing county by number of residents and the seventh fastest growing by percentage growth.

Middlesex county grew by 128,917 residents, the largest in the number of residents in any single county in the state. Essex county grew by 66,670 residents, the second most in the state.

Nantucket County had the largest percentage growth, growing by 40.1%. That represents a growth of 4,083 residents.

Franklin and Berkshire were the only two of the fourteen Massachusetts counties to decline in number of residents. The number of Franklin County residents reduced by 343 residents, representing a decline of 0.5%. Berkshire County saw its number of residents decline by 2,193, a 1.7% decline.
