WORCESTER – A 23-year-old Worcester man was arrested on Wednesday following an investigation by the Worcester Police Department of a fatal accident on Chandler St.
Police arrested Ian McGrath and charged him charged with nine offenses, including:
- motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation
- motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation
- operating under the influence [OUI]
- failure to stay within one lane
- failure to wear a seat belt
- failure to slow for a pedestrian in the roadway
- speeding
- operating negligently so as to endanger
- driving on sidewalks
As ThisWeekinWorcester.com reported earlier today, McGrath was operating a 2011 Toyota Camry when he struck 54-year-old Devalter Marini Rocha while crossing Chandler St. just after midnight on Wednesday morning.
When Worcester police arrived on the scene Rocha, 54, was unresponsive. He was rushed to the hospital and later pronounced dead.
The preliminary investigation indicates that McGrath hit a parked vehicle and traveled on the sidewalk hitting a flower box and a sign. After entering Chandler Street again, McGrath traveled across the double yellow line and hit Rocha.
Only after hitting a parked 2004 Jaguar did McGrath come to a stop on the front lawn of Worcester State University.
