Council Votes to Increase Median Tax Rate in Worcester by 5%

WORCESTER – The City Council voted on Tuesday night on the Fiscal Year 2020 Tax Classification for residences and businesses in Worcester.

The Council approved in a 7-4 vote line 284 — a $17.00 residential tax rate and a $35.16 commercial rate. The rate is per $1,000 valuation.

The FY2020 residential rate is $1.00 less than 2019, and the commercial rate increased by $0.26 compare to this year.

According to the City of Worcester, the total assessed value for all taxable property is $14.646 Billion for fiscal year 2020, an increase of 8.28% from this year. 

Due to the increase in valuation, the median tax rate increased by five percent and the average residential tax bill will increase by $154. The average commercial tax bill will increase by $1,660.

Councilors that voted for line 284 were At-Large Councilors Moe Bergman, Khrystian King, Konnie Lukes, and Gary Rosen; and district councilors Sean Rose, George Russell and Candy Mero-Carlson.

Mayor Joe Petty, At-Large Councilor Kate Toomey, and district councilors Sarai River and Matt Wally voted against the line.
