WORCESTER – The Worcester City Council meets Tuesday night, September 3.

Ahead of each City Council meeting, ThisWeekinWorcester.com [TWIW] will provide a preview to help keep readers informed of the on-goings of the city’s governing body.

Each preview will highlight items from the City Council agenda for that week that haven’t already been covered by TWIW.

This week’s preview consists of five items regarding how the City’s animal control responds to calls and fines related to animal control violations, a proposed tribute to the City’s Italian community on the soon-to-be former grounds of Mt. Carmel Church, and the possibility of bringing the Boston Celtics G-League team to Worcester.

Councilor Mero-Carlson Calls for Better Animal Control, Ordinances

District 2 City Councilor Candy Mero-Carlson has five items on this week’s agenda that all focus on how the City handles their Animal Control operations and what the City can do to enforce the safety of pets.

Among the items, Councilor Mero-Carlson is requesting a review of the current staff and structure of the Worcester Police Department’s Animal Control operations. Specifically, Mero-Carlson is wondering if the size of the Animal Control staff is adequate to handle a city the size of Worcester.

Mero-Carlson is also requesting a report on the response and resolutions to calls to Animal Control over the past two years, a report on the current equipment used by Animal Control and a list of what equipment could be purchased to improve operations.

The fourth and fifth items requested include an ordinance to establish that motor vehicles cannot be used as a kennel for pets and an ordinance establishing that no animal can be left in vehicles on public ways during extreme weather.

Mt. Carmel Coming Down, But a Tribute Going Up?

Staying with Mero-Carlson, the D2 Councilor represents the residents in the Shrewsbury St. area and has requested that the City work with the future developer of the Mt. Carmel Church property to find a way to tribute the Italian-American residents in that area.

Councilor Mer0-Carlson is requesting that City Manager Ed Augustus work with the developer and “any other interested parties” to find an appropriate location on the Mt. Carmel property to recognize Worcester’s Italian community.

Another Pro Team Coming to Worcester?

Earlier this summer, the Boston Celtics purchased their NBA G-League team — the Maine Red Claws — outright from the ownership group in Portland.

District 1 City Councilor Sean Rose has requested that Augustus consider reaching out to the Celtics about the possibility of bringing the Red Claws to Worcester.

The city has the Bravehearts, Railers, Pirates and soon, the Worcester Red Sox. Why not take a shot at a pro basketball team, too?

For an excellent write-up and interview with Councilor Rose on bringing the Red Claws to Worcester, check out Walter Bird’s story on his recent venture The Worcester Sports Scene below:
