Closures, Traffic Delays on Mass Pike and I-290 this Week

By TWIW Staff | May 31, 2021
Last Updated: May 30, 2021

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation [MassDOT] announced three overnight construction areas, on I-290, and the Mass Pike that will require lane closures and exit closings during overnight hours between Tuesday, June 1, and Thursday, June 3.

I-290 Westbound Exit Closures

On Tuesday, June 1, the on-ramp to I-290 westbound at Exit 21, from Plantation St., will close at 11 PM and reopen on Wednesday, June 2 at 5 AM. Detour signage will direct traffic to use the Exit 22 on-ramp.

Also on Tuesday, June 1, the off-ramp from I-290 westbound at Exit 20, to Lincoln St., will close at 10 PM and reopen Wednesday, June 2, at 5 AM. Detour signage will direct traffic to use exit 18.

On Wednesday, June 2, the I-290 westbound off-ramp at Exit 19, to I-190 northbound, will close at 10 PM and reopen on Thursday, June 3, at 5 AM. Detour signage will direct traffic to continue on I-290 westbound and take the exit 18 off ramp, to Lincoln Street in order to access I-290 eastbound back to I-190 northbound.

Lane Closures on Mass Pike Near Millbury Exit 96

Each night between Tuesday, June 1, and Thursday, June 3, lane closures on I-90, both eastbound and westbound, will take place around the bridge at Exit 96 (old Exit 11) in Millbury. The lane closures will occur between 10 PM and 5 AM each night.

The on-ramps from Rt. 122 onto the Mass Pike will be closed during these hours.

On the night of Wednesday, June 2, rolling road blocks on the eastbound side of I-90 will begin shortly before midnight through 3 AM on Thursday, June 3. Brief holds of traffic will take place to enable bridge beam removal to take place.

Mass Pike Reduced to Two Lanes Each Way Over Weekend

From Friday, June 4, at 7 PM through Sunday, June 6 at 5 AM, all lanes on the westbound side of the Mass Pike will shift to the eastbound side between Rt. 9 in Framingham and I-495 in Hopkinton.

This will reduce traffic headed in both directions to two lanes.

This closure, which is weather dependent, is a trial for future closings to occur on weekends to facilitate the replacement of bridges this summer over both sides of the Mass Pike.

The bridges include Flanders Road in Westborough and Parkerville Road, Cordaville Road, and Woodland Road in Southborough. This work will occur on weekends, excluding Fourth of July weekend.

During the trial run from June 4 to June 6, no local roads are closed. MassDOT warns that traffic delays caused by the lane closures may affect local roads.
