UPDATE: Due to weather conditions, the herbicide treatment of Coes Pond scheduled for August 27 has been postponed until Monday, August 31.
WORCESTER – The Worcester Department of Public Works & Parks [DPW] announced that Coes Pond will receive treatment to control the invasive aquatic plant Trapa natans, also referred to as water chestnut, on Thursday, August 27.
In the announcement made on Wednesday, August 26, DPW warned that all residents should discontinue using water from Coes Reservoir for irrigation of plants or lawns or watering livestock, and to keep clear of application boats for the duration of the day. Recreational use in the swimming area may continue.
The treatment of Coes Pond is an application of a Herbicide treatment. According to DPW, “The application of herbicides is a common practice to reduce invasive weed density and poses no risk to humans and animals after application is complete, though water use for irrigation is discouraged.”
Restrictions on Coes Pond are expected to be lifted on Friday, August 28.
