WORCESTER – City Councilor At-Large Donna Colorio is asking the City to consider a feasibility study on moving the Worcester Police Department headquarters to a new building at the former site of Our Lady of Mount Carmel church on Mulberry Street.

The current headquarters at 9-11 Lincoln Sq. opened in 1978. The headquarters is roughly half a mile away from the proposed Mount Carmel site.

Multiple sources have told ThisWeekinWorcester.com the headquarters is in need of “extensive” repairs, including likely needing a new roof.

Mount Carmel church was torn down in the fall of 2019 after needed repairs to the church were deemed too expensive.  The church was dedicated in 1929.

The land is more than five acres in size and is assessed at nearly $8 million. The land includes the Mount Carmel Recreation Center and the Joe DiMaggio Little League field.

Colorio’s item will go before the City Council at Tuesday night’s meeting at 6:30 PM.
