WORCESTER – The Worcester Police Department [WPD] is investigating a serious single-vehicle crash which occurred late Monday afternoon on Sunderland Rd.

According to the WPD, around 4:45 PM, officers were called to the area of Sunderland Rd. and Maranda St. for a report of a motor vehicle on fire.

When they arrived, an SUV was overturned and on fire in the middle of the road. Worcester EMS and Worcester Fire personnel were able to extract the male and female occupants from the burning vehicle. They were both transported to the hospital with very serious injuries.

The WPD Crash Reconstruction Unit was called to the scene to begin a preliminary investigation which indicates the SUV was traveling down the road when the operator lost control of the vehicle and collided it into a tree.

The vehicle then flipped over and caught on fire, trapping both occupants inside.

The crash remains under investigation.
