MARLBOROUGH – Shortly after 3:30 AM on the morning of Tuesday, May 12, a Massachusetts State Police [MSP] Trooper observed a Volkswagen Atlas on Rt. 290 East exceeding the speed limit.
When the vehicle took the off ramp to Rt. 495 North, the vehicle partially crossed over the solid white line.
The trooper pulled the vehicle over.
The vehicle’s operator was 28-year-old Anthony Oliver of Stratford, CT. Another male was in the passenger seat and a young child was sleeping in the back seat.
The trooper soon learned the vehicle was a rental and Oliver was not the person who rented it.
After arriving on the scene, a second trooper elected to remove Oliver from the vehicle based on his assessment of nervous and erratic behavior.
A routine pat down search led to the discovery of marijuana in Oliver’s pocket.
The troopers reported that Oliver began disregarding orders and put his hand into his pants pocket, attempting to remove an item.
The troopers took Oliver to the ground and handcuffed him after a brief struggle. A .32 caliber Smith & Wesson was recovered from Oliver’s pocket.
A search of the vehicle revealed 26 Smith & Wesson cartridges and a package containing a large quantity of a substance believed to be cocaine.
Troopers also found six tablets believed to be ecstasy.
The passenger was not charged.
Oliver has full custody of the child in the back seat. The child was released to a family member.
Oliver faces charges that include Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Firearm with a Defaced Serial Number, Carrying a Loaded Firearm, Wanton and Reckless Child Endangerment, Trafficking in Cocaine, Possession of a Class C Substance, Resisting Arrest and traffic violations.
