Worcester’s Transitional Assistance Office Now Open at Former Big Y Supermarket

WORCESTER – The Department of Transitional Assistance [DTA] office has officially opened in the former Big Y supermarket on Rt. 20 in Worcester.

The DTA left its previous location on Sudbury St. in downtown Worcester to move into the vacant grocery store.  On Monday, dozens of cars filled the Southwest Cutoff Plaza parking lot at 8 AM for the opening of the new office.

The store has been empty since Big Y closed in 2011 after nearly 20 years in business.

The DTA provides low-income individuals and families with direct economic assistance, food assistance and workforce training opportunities.

The DTA office in Worcester is responsible for managing and monitoring the delivery of these services throughout the city.

The work being done inside the man space of the old supermarket appears to be dividing the space to hold additional tenants.
