Voters of District 1 should vote for me, Ed Moynihan, because I have the leadership skills and experience necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of city councilor from day one. I have served the City of Worcester as Chair of Community Development Advisory Committee for four years. I co-chaired the Vote No Slots campaign to keep a job killing slot parlor out of Kelly Square. I have volunteered as a coach and board member of numerous youth recreation programs from Tris Speaker Little League to Burncoat Babe Ruth to St. Peter’s Parish Basketball Program. I have volunteered thousands of hours to youth sports throughout the city to insure Worcester’s young people have well run, safe places to play soccer, basketball and baseball.
As District 1 City Councilor, I have the experience and confidence to bring additional, diverse economic development to Worcester. I have worked in many different sectors of the economy. I have worked for state government, for private companies (including Tweeds Restaurant and Spag’s), for Worcester State University, and for 22 years I have owned and operated my own small business.
Worcester has increased the number of restaurants and new housing units. This shows a confidence by the private sector in the ability of local economy to sustain these new projects. However, we need to diversify the types of businesses that we attract to provide more jobs for our local residents, especially our college graduates. We need to focus on small business retention and growth and entrepreneurship. We also need to address the adverse effect the dual tax rate has had on economic growth. I bring a breadth of experience and independent minded approach to the City Council to address these important issues.
I know that the strength of District 1 lies in its strong, livable neighborhoods. These neighborhoods need strong schools, safe and clean streets, accessible parks, and access to cultural amenities. I support the Complete Streets program, to which I proposed the addition of the Green Man+ program. I support structuring TIF agreements to support local labor and to support local artists with a Percent for the Arts. I would look to reinstitute the Park Rangers to insure the quality of our parks. I have advocated for our local colleges to provide a discount for our public school graduates. I believe that we need to have a comprehensive long term plan to provide the city with a road map for the future. We should use that plan to set benchmarks against which we can be judged. Finally, I have learned from Tony Economou the absolute need of first rate constituent services. I am honored to have his endorsement.
I have run a substantive campaign built on issues that the residents of District 1 care about – strong, safe, clean neighborhoods, access to jobs and growing our tax base, access to clean public parks, and a laser-like focus on constituent services. I have the necessary leadership and experience to bring those concerns to the City Council and achieve results.
