WORCESTER – The Worcester District and Superior Courts closed during the morning of Monday, Oct. 6, after a man died from a fall to the first floor inside the building.
The courthouse has four floors, with balconies on the second, third, and fourth floors, which overlook an atrium.
This Week in Worcester spoke with a woman inside a second-floor courtroom at the time of the incident. She said a sudden surge of noise came from outside the courtroom, which included people yelling and running. The noise reached a level that prohibited those in the courtroom from hearing the voices of those involved in the proceedings.
Soon after, a court officer entered the courtroom and instructed the judge to exit the bench.
Multiple sources inside the courthouse when the incident occurred report that the man sent himself over the balcony railing and to his fatal fall.
Court personnel evacuated the courthouse soon after the incident. The courthouse is expected to reopen on Tuesday.
According to a report from Boston 25, Massachusetts State Police detectives responded to the report of an unattended death at around 11:30 AM.
