BOSTON – Gov. Maura Healey’s office announced on Wednesday, Aug. 28, that the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded Massachusetts over $20 million from its Shelter and Services Program. The funding will support family shelter costs across the state.
The award includes $15,408,787 in competitive funding and $4,896,807.87 in reserve funding.
Healey’s administration filed the application in tandem with the City of Boston in June. Boston will receive $1,349,531.24 from the award.
“Massachusetts urgently needs federal support as we work to meet unprecedented demand on our family shelter system as a result of a surge in immigrant families arriving in our state,” said Healey. “The Biden-Harris administration has taken important steps to address this federal problem in light of Congress’s failure to act, and they are seeing results with illegal border crossings down significantly.”
The FEMA award more than doubles the largest provided to Massachusetts from the Shelter and Services Program. The previous highest award from the agency was $9 million.
