5 Things You Need To Know Today in Worcester – October 21, 2019

Steve “The Sarge” Sargent Turns 40

Steve “The Sarge” Sargent turns 40 today.

Known as somewhat of a “local legend”, Sarge can be seen most weeknights and weekends all over the city working the game clock at high school or college sporting events, helping out at cheerleading competitions with his wife Tina, or just lending a helping hand to his family and friends.

Sarge’s most outstanding contribution? His time.

For decades, Sarge has volunteered much of his time with Worcester’s little league and Babe Ruth baseball leagues — namely Joe DiMaggio little league and East Side Babe Ruth –, with countless local political campaigns, and with numerous committees and events at Holy Name high school — where Sarge graduated high school and is a member of the school’s alumni Hall of Fame.

If you happen to see Sarge today, please wish him the happiest of birthdays.

[Full disclosure: “The Sarge” is this reporter’s MUCH older brother. And as much as I wanted to roast him for turning 40, I thought better of it and will wait until his 50th birthday.]

Worcester May Get Money from FEMA for 2018 Snowstorm

On Wednesday, FEMA announced that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts would receive more than $2 million for snow removal costs as a result of a 2018 snowstorm.

The major snowstorm dropped nearly 22 inches of snow in Worcester between March 13 and 14, 2018.

The state will review the grant and later determine where the money will be allocated.

The funding is a result of a partnership between FEMA and the state’s Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.
