City Launches New Housing Initiative Worcester Housing Now

On Friday, Worcester’s Executive Office of Economic Development announced a new initiative known as Worcester Housing Now.

Mayor Joseph M. Petty and City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. made the announcement at the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Game Changers conference at Mechanics Hall.

“While there is great excitement for all the new development happening in our downtown, we must ensure all residents have safe and healthy living conditions,” said Mayor Joseph M. Petty. “Triple deckers are the soul of Worcester and bringing back offline units will provide some immediate relief to the lack of affordable rental unit availability.”

Worcester Housing Now will off eight components [see here] to help both owner-occupied multi-family housing as well as provide responsible developers with streamlined access to capital for revitalizing troubled properties. 

“The creation, rehabilitation, and preservation of affordable housing within our neighborhoods is something the City administration takes very seriously,” added City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. “This new multi-layered funding and educational approach will allow for safe, affordable units for both individuals and families across our city.”

An informational meeting on the Worcester Housing Now program will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 12 from 3 PM to 5 PM at City Hall.

 

Groundbreaking for Crompton Park Renovations is Tuesday

On Tuesday, October 29, the City of Worcester will host a ground breaking ceremony for renovations being made to Crompton Park. 

The $1.4 million renovation project includes:

  • Two new concrete NBA-sized basketball courts (94×50) with perimeter chain link fencing and sports and security lighting
  • New accessible porous pathways and paver plaza
  • New accessible bleachers, benches, trash receptacles, bike rack, kiosks, tree plantings, pathway lighting and security/entrance pipe gates
  • New ornamental fencing and wood guardrails along the perimeter of the park
  • Security camera infrastructure (in anticipation of additional work)

The groundbreaking will take place at 4:30 PM at 47 Quinsigamond Ave.

Ribbon Cutting at Mulcahy Field is Wednesday

Break ground on park, cut ribbon on another. 

The City of Worcester will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for renovations made to the fieldhouse at Mulcahy Field on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 4:30 PM at 158 Dorchester St. 

The new fieldhouse features a concession area, ADA compliant restrooms, an upgraded heating system and a new entrance.

This renovation is the beginning of a larger $1.2 million capital improvement project at Mulcahy Field which will include a complete renovation of the current baseball field to accommodate use by the District 4 Little League.

Work on the baseball field is scheduled to begin in July 2020.

DA’s Office Child Advocacy Center Receives National Reaccreditation

On Friday, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. announced his office’s Child Advocacy Center [CAC] has received national reaccreditation by the National Children’s Alliance Board of Directors.

“Our CAC is a place where children can feel safe,” Early said. “We’re very proud again to receive this recognition of our hard work with our most vulnerable victims and witnesses.”

The CAC, which helps the most vulnerable victims and witnesses of crime to talk about their abuse and trauma in a comfortable and friendly environment.

 

Tito’s Vodka Donating $5 for Every Coat Donated to Sheriff’s Coat Drive

Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis is hosting a kick-off party for the Sheriff’s annual coat drive on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

The party is at the Beer Garden from 5:30 PM to 8 PM.

For every new or lightly used winter jacket donated, Tito’s Vodka will donate $5.
