In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

These five things can cover a whole range of subjects and issues that we feel are pertinent to understanding what’s going on in the city and the cities and towns surrounding Worcester.

In today’s edition — Friday, Nov. 22 —  Redemption Rock has two hoppy new beers, IVF opens a new fertility center in Worcester, Saint Vincent Hospital is offering same-day knee surgeries, the nickname for the Worcester Red Sox will finally be revealed during a live event (that you can attend), and EPIC hosted its first City Serve Worcester event.

New Beers on Tap (or in a Can) at Redemption Rock Brewing

Redemption Rock brewed some new beers they’re excited to pour. The brewery, located at 333 Shrewsbury St. in Worcester, just introduced Good Hang: Simcoe, which is the third beer in its single-hop series. It “features a big boppy aroma of dank, piney and citrusy notes, a bready and subtle stone fruit flavor and a dry, crisp finish. Three Decker is also ready, a new helles lager that features a rich honey malt aroma and a touch of floral noble hops.

Both are on tap now.

Boston IVF, the most experienced fertility provider in Massachusetts, offering world-renowned fertility treatment services, just announced it has opened the doors of its new Worcester Fertility Center.

Located at 100 MLK Jr. Blvd., (Suite 300), Boston IVF’s Worcester Fertility Center is led by award-winning Reproductive Endocrinologists Dr. Kim Thornton, Dr. Samuel Pang, Dr. Samuel Pauli – and a team of clinicians and scientists that utilize advanced technologies and 30+ years of invaluable experience to give patients a significantly higher chance for pregnancy and delivery.

With on-site services such as fertility consultations, IUI, uterine cavity assessments, and treatment monitoring, the Worcester location offers individuals and couples a streamlined and convenient option in their journey to parenthood.

“Our new center reinforces Boston IVF’s commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare,” said Boston IVF reproductive endocrinologist Kim Thornton, MD. “We all share in a mission to expand access to treatment and provide more comprehensive programs that deliver an optimal experience for fertility patients in Worcester and the surrounding areas.”

According to the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, more than 7 million people in the USA have problems getting pregnant or carrying a pregnancy to term. As access to infertility treatment is declining, the rate of people who need services is rising.

“Our new fertility center in Worcester is dedicated to giving people efficient access to the treatments they need – and optimizing their odds of a successful pregnancy.”

EPIC Hosts Its First City Serve Worcester Event to Raise Money for Youth Leaders with Disabilities

EPIC hosted its first City Serve Worcester to raise money for EPIC, an initiative of Triangle, which  provides service learning and leadership development programs for local youth with disabilities. On Saturday, Nov. 16, the annual “serve-a-thon” transformed the Greendale Family Branch YMCA in Worcester, as participants painted rooms in the facility and assembled school supply packets for Worcester Public School teachers. The day was led by EPIC Service Warriors, youth leaders with disabilities who participate in service events and leadership development trainings throughout the year.

City Serve Worcester raised more than $5,000 to support the upcoming year of programming for EPIC, which includes service projects, leadership development trainings, and social gatherings for young leaders with disabilities. Over 60 volunteers participated, with representatives from the Worcester Bravehearts, RH White, Open Sky Community Services and Zia Young Adult Access Center.

During the opening ceremony, volunteers heard from EPIC service leader Keven Martin, a resident of Sterling and a student at Quinsigamond Community College. “Although I do have a disability, I don’t look at it in a negative way. It’s a part of me; I embrace it. EPIC not only does a lot for the community, but it has made an impact on my life,” said Martin, as he described his past EPIC service project participation. “Community service projects like what you are participating in today make the world go round. If you take away one thing today, I hope that you know the impact you are having on the community.”

Saint Vincent Hospital Patients Can Go Home on Same Day of Surgery

Qualified Patients at Saint Vincent Hospital are now heading home the same day they have their knee and hip replacement surgeries. This new advanced recovery program, which is appropriate for select candidates, allows patients to return to their homes the evening of surgery, where they can heal in their own environment.

After surgery, these patients begin physical therapy at home, but are fast tracked into outpatient physical therapy one week after surgery as opposed to the traditional path, which is 3 weeks after surgery.

Over the last 3 years, Saint Vincent Hospital has averaged 1,000 joint replacement surgeries each year. During this time, the Joint Academy team at Saint Vincent Hospital made numerous advancements to protocols and patient care pathways to allow this same-day surgery option.
