Ravens “Jan” and “Poe” Join EcoTarium Exhibit

The EcoTarium has two new members for their Wild Cat Station — two young female ravens, “Jan” and “Poe” are now part of the new exhibit featuring two mountain lions and native bird species.

According to the EcoTarium, the ravens are very intelligent and social. So much so, the pair was deemed “imprinted,” meaning they were too comfortable with human caretakers and didn’t possess the food-hunting skills necessary to be released into their natural habitat.

Janet and Gordon Lankton made a generous capital campaign gift to the Wild Cat Station and were given the the opportunity of naming the ravens. One raven is named “Jan,” to compliment Janet’s beloved pseudonym “the old crow” and the other female has been named “Poe.”

The ravens are talkative and vocal: they coo, grumble, growl, chirp, and scream. They are highly destructive with an active curiosity to investigate everything. Their diet consists of different rodents, fish, various produce and prepared meats. In the wild, their lifespan is 10-15 years, under human care they have been known to live up to 20 years.
