WORCESTER – A flood watch warning has been issued by the National Weather Service [NWS] for Worcester and all of Southern New England beginning Friday morning and into Saturday afternoon.

Heavy rain is expected late Friday into Saturday morning. Combined with rapid snow melt and temperatures in the high 50s, there is a strong possibility of river and stream flooding along with isolated ice jam flooding.

The potential for significant urban and street flooding from snow clogged storm drains exists.

“It’s important that we keep catch basins and storm drains clear over the next few days in order to minimize flooding and keep our streets safe,” said City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. in a released statement. “Having the public assist us in this effort wherever possible is greatly appreciated.”

According to the NWS, rainfall totals may reach four inches.

The NWS advises residents to take the proper precautionary measures of monitoring forecasts and staying alert for flood warnings.
