WORCESTER – On Wednesday morning, a three-year-old child in a stroller and her grandmother were struck by a car in a crosswalk while crossing Chandler St. in Worcester.

According to the Worcester Police Dept., a Chevy Malibu traveling westbound on Chandler St. struck one vehicle — a Toyota Prius — before crossing a lane of oncoming traffic and striking the pedestrians at the intersection of the crosswalk and sidewalk. The child and stroller were pulled under the Malibu. The Malibu continued and struck a pole, knocking it to the ground.

The Malibu was lifted up by witnesses, including Worcester Dept. of Public Works workers, to free the child.

Officers assisted the pedestrian victims, who were transported to the hospital by an ambulance.

Two passengers from the Toyota Prius were transported to the hospital for minor injuries. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. The grandmother and child suffered serious lower body injuries, including broken bones, but are in stable condition.

In a released statement, City Manager Edward M. Augustus, Jr. said in response to the accident: “Our thoughts are with the grandmother and three-year old child who were injured this morning in a frightening automobile accident on Chandler Street. We send our hopes and prayers for their speedy recovery. We also express our sincere gratitude to the City of Worcester employees who reacted selflessly in an emergency situation. Their immediate response and thoughtful actions helped prevent a more tragic outcome and serve as a source of pride for our entire City.”

Everyone involved has been questioned and the investigation is continuing.
