SHREWSBURY – The Ground Round restaurant, which closed its location in Shrewsbury in 2004, will return in 2025.
The restaurant will open at the current Route 9 location of Bauhinia, at 271 Boston Turnpike, according to the Community Advocate.
When it closed in 2004, the Ground Round operated at 225 Boston Turnpike, currently home to a Walgreens Store.
The Ground Round Grill and Bar, founded by Howard Johnson’s, first opened in 1969. When the two brands split in 1985, corporate owned and franchise locations combined for 215 Ground Round restaurants.
The emergence of other casual dining and family dinner concepts in the 1990s along with financial issues led to a chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 2004. Around 60 restaurants, including the Shrewsbury location, closed.
By 2021, there were only 15 locations. There are currently three locations in North Dakota, and one in Ohio.
