WORCESTER – Helfand’s, a New York-style deli, is opening on Highland Street in Worcester in the former home of the Sahara restaurant.
Although there’s no opening date announced for the deli yet, Helfand’s was approved for a common victualer license by the Worcester License Commission on Thursday.
On Tuesday, Helfand’s shared their story on social media (see below) and announced they will open sometime this fall. According to the post, Mike Sobel, a former executive chef at Assumption College, executive catering chef at WPI and several other restaurants and banquet facilities, will be heading the restaurant.
According to the License Commission agenda, Helfand’s Deli plans to be open seven days a week, from 11 AM to 7 PM. City of Worcester permit records show Helfand’s Deli will have seating for 18 customers.
The former restaurant space was built in 1945 and is roughly 3,500 square feet, according to city records. Sahara closed in Dec. 2021 after over 20 years in business. The building was sold by Aoude Realty LLC to Helfand’s Real Estate LLC for $810,000.
Helfand’s Deli has a website, Facebook and Instagram page.
