Holiday Travel Expected to be Heaviest in MA on Friday After Christmas

The Friday after Christmas is expected to be the busiest travel day across Massachusetts

“Holiday cheer is at an all-time high this year, with unemployment at historically low levels, and noted improvements in both disposable income and household net worth,” said Paula Twidale, vice president, AAA Travel. “Travelers should be getting used to crowded highways and airports, as this marks the eighth straight year of new record-high travel volumes for the year-end holidays.”

Across the country, more than 116 million people are expected to travel over the holiday —  a 4% increase over last year and the most travelers in the 20 years since AAA began tracking holiday travel.

“Contributing to this year’s record numbers are lower gas prices, lower employment rates and rising incomes that allow folks to go, go, go,” said Fran Mayko, AAA Northeast spokeswoman.

Of the overall 116 million travelers:

  • 91% or 105 million people plan to drive, which reflects a 4% increase;
  • 6% or 7 million will fly, which reflects a 5% increase; and
  • 3% or 4 million, a 3% increase, will take a train, bus or some other mode of transportation.
