BOSTON – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation [MassDOT] released an update on Friday, April 9, notifying residents that motor vehicle inspection services will not resume until potentially Saturday, April 17.

The vendor that provides the equipment to facilitate the vehicle inspection system experienced a cyber attack on Tuesday, March 30. Inspection stations are unable to deliver inspection services while the equipment is not operating.

Applus Technologies, the vendor which provides the services that enables stations across the state to deliver inspections, provides the service in several other states as well.

In the days after the service outage began, the Registry of Motor Vehicles [RMV] announced the extension of windshield stickers which expired in March, indicated by a “3,” to an expiration of April 30.

RMV also extended the expiration of stickers on vehicles purchase on or after March 23 to April 30. Newly purchased vehicles typically require inspection within 7 days.

Vehicle owners who failed an inspection typically have a 60-day window to get retested for free. RMV extended that window one day for each day that stickers are not available.

The RMV also advised law enforcement agencies of the service outage.

According to the RMV, an average of around 15,000 vehicle inspections are conducted daily in Massachusetts. As many as 20,000 happen on the first two days of each month.

The RMV estimates some 40,000 to 50,000 vehicle may still have a March sticker.
